Craft beer maker BrewDog developed their own Modern Apprenticeship programme with the help of funding from Skills Development Scotland, and guidance from the Scottish Food and Drink Skills Academy.
We were delighted to get involved with the project and started to work with BrewDog in August 2015.
Our focus has been with apprentices working on the Modern Apprenticeship Food & Drink Operations Pathway: Production and Processing Skills. The apprentices range from 21 to 38 years of age and work in a variety of roles across BrewDog including Packaging, Supply Chain and IT.
Since starting the programme, BrewDog now feel they have not only great staff but also well trained staff who can multi-skill in their departments. This in turn is helping to increase productivity and job enrichment.
It follows the firm making use of the Skills for Growth initiative offered by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) and Investors in People, which provides free consultancy and support to identify growth priorities.
Many employees that undertake Modern Apprenticeships with ourselves go on to achieve further qualifications. A popular qualification is the Train the Trainer Programme Endorsed by the ILM where employees get the opportunity to focus on the development of their own practical training skills.
Louis Schyma, who works in Supply Chain at BrewDog, successfully completed his award and now fellow members of staff at the brewery have followed in his footsteps.
“We’re a young company and a young workforce with many people in their teens and early-20s so it made sense to get people on board with gaining qualifications. We have business apprentices covering the supply chain, business administration, finance, customer service and IT, and even more apprentices doing food processing and packaging.”
